Did not make it to the Farmer's Market today, but since it *is* early for pattypan squash, I'm pretty confident staying home and going for a long walk/reading jam in the park was a much better option. Especially since I got halfway through Behemoth! Yay reading!
Part of the reason I'm so crazed by this pattypan squash hunt is last year they were only in stores for two weeks, *extremely* late in their season. I only managed to make one of my favorite dishes ONCE last year-- you can imagine how very devastating to my tastebuds that was ;___:. The dish requires sauteing sliced crockneck and pattypan squashes together with diced tomatoes, garlic, spices, and onions. Serve over rice and you have DELICIOUSNESS AND THE TASTE OF ALL THAT IS RIGHT WITH SPRING-SUMMER.
When we grew pattypan squash up in Oregon, we always had viable tasty little baby squashes by May 1st, but I'm beginning to think our garden was MAGIC. And in a way it was; it sprawled out for a quarter of an acre and was my little sanctuary of green goodness. Working in that little field was like nurturing a piece of my soul, and it was a fantastic place to read and dream of the future once the tending was done. And oh the tasty things that came from it! We had pattypan and crockneck squash from May-September and it was absolute heaven <3.
One day I will have my own house, and the backyard will be crammed with roses and squash <3.
