Fandom: Kingdom
Characters: Dusty and Mara
Prompts: fanfic100 Teammates
"I think I'm drunk," Mara sighed, pressing the frosted mug against her flushed cheeks. "But it isn't getting that awful worm daemon out of my head. It didn't have a face, Dusty! Just a mess of teeth in all directions!"
Mara's entire body shuddered in revoltion. Sometimes, she really hated Hunting.
Dusty leaned back in his chair. His long legs were stretched out on the chair next to Mara's. "At least it went down easily," He gestured with his own empty mug, and Mara quickly tipped out the last of the alcohol.
He'd earned it, after all, slaying that horrible thing.
The kitchen was quiet, save for Dusty's measured gulps of alcohol and the timer on the oven. She wished there was a Hunter with the ability to manipulate time-- why the hell was it taking so long to heat up a pizza?
It would have been faster to just get delivery, but all the pizza joints had blacklisted the house. She could have killed Deon when he jumped out of the shadows and made the last pizza boy scream bloody murder. It might have blown over, if not for half the Hunters of Sunset City storming out of the Fortress, relics raised to defense of the schmuck cowering in the corner of the porch.
A week later and buzzed, Mara toyed with the idea Deon had planned the whole thing. Frightening pizza boys was child's play for a guy with Deon's mischief making skills. And he had been behind most of the blacklisting incidents...
The kitchen fell into what any other night would be a comfortable silence. But there was a tension in Mara's shoulders that no amount of alcohol could ease. It came, she supposed, from the nightmares. Half a journal filled this week and still they lingered in her mind.
She wanted to make them someone else's problem, but the words never came. She fumbled over her own stupid worries and fears whenever she tried to tell Lynn, Deon, the others.
But tonight, she almost couldn't help herself. Maybe it was the unholy daemon. Maybe it was the beer. She didn't really care.
"Been a lot of small fries lately," Mara ventured, fingers tapping at the table, eyes too focused to really be as drunk as she felt. Her stomach rumbled, but it wasn't from hunger. Just get it out. Her mind screamed, and for once, the words began to tumble out. "Real ugly, but damned easy to kill."
Dusty pushed his feet off the chair, slowly lowering the mug from his lips. "You think something bigger's coming?"
Mara shrugged, stretching her much shorter legs out on the chair beside Dusty. The tension was still there, but it wasn't hers alone. "There's always something bigger coming."

I am too lazy to log into my fic account XD
Date: 2009-04-23 08:59 pm (UTC)I'm actually going to put it under the Kingdom100 prompt Inevitable, but Veteran would have been my #2 pick. This is what I get for attempting TWO fanfic100 prompt lists. At least one of them is game wide? XD
And I'm sure you'll come up with something kickarse for "Veteran" :P. I mean, all you have to do is draw Dusty in his uniform and there you go, instant winner is you XD.
