kolI spent the entire episode squeeling and sniffling. It really felt like a series finale. In fact, if the show had ended there, I would have been totally satisfied, because it set the perfect tone and, well, my favorite characters were still kicking. Which, I have a feeling won't be true of the actual series finale. So my big fears about us not getting a backend of the season due to the strike? Totally not justified.
As for the episode:
THE CHAIR. Oh god, the lighting and the set design and the cinematography on that scene was brilliant, totally capturing that angst about the missing parent/authority figure. That chair is empty, and yet at the same time it is filled with memories that can stand taller, hit harder, and be four times as terrifying as the real person. That was the part of the show I started sniffling during and by the end I had to pause because it just hit way too many emotional kinks.
I really thought they were going to kill Saul off; I was expecting the unexpected, and airlocking Saul at the half-way mark was definitely something that would have been extremely shocking. I'm so happy he's still there, but it did keep me anxiously waiting for the next shoe to drop.
OH KARA. She really held it together this episode, and I was so moved by Katie's performance, because you could really see her bringing in all the things Kara went through, and how far she's come, and everything she's worked herself through, especially in that final shot at Apoca!beach. And it was so satisfying seeing her and Lee, talking like adults, talking to each other with maturity <3.

Never let it be said that Saul doesn't have balls. Going up to Adama like he did? Oh, so proud of him. His actor did a marvelous job (although it does take me out of the show when he does the BIG EYES OF OH CRAP PEOPLE MIGHT SUSPECT ME OF BEING A CYLON thing). And I really felt for Tyrol and Anders; I would love to write a fic for those two being bumbling Cylons. Really hope those two end up surviving and being BFFs.
I'm tired of the sexy!betrayer angle that the producers love to use with the girl!Cylons.
I really want Felix to be the fifth. If only so his actor can get more screentime. He's reclaiming the everyman part from Tyrol and it fits him so perfectly. SING FOR ME AGAIN FELIX :3
I love the parallel with Bill Adama x Laura Roslin and Kara and Lee; both have so much genderwank going on, and it is so fascinating to see how the new generation is maturing so closely into their 'parents.' Laura in particular was very much like a Step Mother imparting I'M PROUD OF YOU MY NOT-BIRTH-BUT-STILL-MY-SON <3 aura, which, as someone who has been in that situation (well, not SON, but you know), really hit up that emotional kink. And Bill vs Kara? So happy we got some resolution there, even if it wasn't face-to-face. Because that empty chair scene wasn't just for Lee, but for Bill's real parallel in the 'next generation,' Kara.
Totally going to have to do another commentary post on parallels, and the theory on everything happening again-- until Lee broke the cycle.
I could go on rambling, but in short.. I love my show. I'm so happy I waited until I felt better and could have the energy to sit through that. <3!!!!
Bleach commentary parts 3-6 should be up tomorrow and Thursday. I had to go back and rewatch about 15 episodes, but it was worth it. I'm going to start reading the manga while I read the filler, because I've been informed the awesomeness of Matsumoto fades in the filler, and she's one of my favorite characters so I can't be having that.
