The wind trashed against the house all night, striking the wall with such force I could feel it bend. I listened to each crack and groan, twitching after each sound, too well aware the chances of a tree crashing into my apartment. And then at 2AM, the power went out, leaving me with nothing but the dull orange light of Shiny being denied power. There was no going back to sleep then, so I crept through the black house, easing jumpy, whining dogs with the flash of the house maglite. Candles were lit, the uneasy light making the danger a little less. It was harder to hear the wind with the dogs clamoring in my lap, demanding their worries be appeased with pets. I lay on the floor, back against the wall, watching the candles burn and the puppies slowly fall to sleep. And at a little before four, as the smallest candle's flame spat at the last of wick, the power came back on.

I slept with my foot against the wall, the light of my lamp pushing the danger away.

But when I left the house hours later, I couldn't help but inspect the trees, searching for any weakness as my sneakers dredged through the mess of leaf, branch, mud, and thrown up dog food. I stretched up my hands to test a trunk, knowing if this tree fell, it could land on my bed.

And it did not bulge, no matter how hard I pushed.

Storm anxieties aside, I am slowly catching up on things. Family dramas have cooled, my mother is now speaking with everyone, and I have received more hours from work. Housemates leave tomorrow, so I'll be in charge of the dogs for a week.

Neve is due before Tuesday 11:59 pacific.

I have to post at Kingdom tonight. Somehow, I think with the rain raging outside, it shouldn't be too hard.

Kol ;-; At my family's home in New Jersey, we were surrounded by gigantic trees, and wind was always bad for us there. I used to be very scared of trees falling on the house, especially after one fell on our driveway and decimated my mom's car. Nobody was hurt, but I can understand why the wind could be such a source of freak-out.

January 2008 got me afraid of falling trees. 100-mph wind storm, and all the news could show for weeks was redwoods in people's houses. If I'd known the winds were only 28-mph during the outage, I wouldn't have worried so, but with the power out, I had no way of knowing. So, scary scary XD.

We've had micro-outages all over the bay area today, but it isn't so intimidating to face when the sun's out. But it is dark now, I've got my eye on the inch and a half of standing water outside the apartment. Our county issued a 'urban and small stream flood advisory,' and the rain isn't going to slack off until Wednesday.

On the plus side, I tend to get creative during rainstorms? XD

And that Valentine fic is absolutely adorkable, I love those two <3333. And Artemis really can't win, can he? If he morphs into human!Artie, he horrifies everyone with the chops and codpiece and the awkwardness and Luna still probably wouldn't notice him. And he's really not that much to look at as a cat, either. Maybe he should take a cue from his ward and set up a secret identity to win Luna over. XD

MAYBE ARTEMIS WILL GROW INTO SOME HOTNESS. LIKE A VERY LATE SPURT. AND THEN LUNA WILL CHOKE ON HER KIBBLE IN SHOCK.

I demand an Artemis make-over story <3 He could be experimenting with new hair and new clothing, and I'm sure all of the Neggies would be so fighting each other for the rights to 'guide' him (Kaz still thinks Artemis needs a cape).

The storm's about 6-8 hours from here... and it's expected to really get us too. Flash flood watches everywhere - not just the burn areas x.x

Bummer that you lost power for so long. Odd that it all happened on Valentine's Day and not Halloween. Those trees coming down would be... scary. (btw: I'm happycube on flickr and just added you)

The power didn't go off until roughly 2AM on Sunday, so it was a late-Valentine from the weather I guess ;). Be safe in this storm when it hits you! It might not look like much on paper but the rain and wind are both ridiculous. Pretty much all the counties up here are on flood advisories, and there's been minor black outs all day (though thankfully our section of Santa Clara only was hit by the one).

I guess the good news is having all this rain might starve off the water rationing everyone is talking about. But I'm a little worried about Big Sur-- all this rain is a recipe for mudslides even without the bare hills. Those fires burned a lot of the retaining vegetation during the summer. *crosses fingers* *___*

;) I'm not planning on going anywhere tomorrow morning... the forecast discussions made it sound pretty damn ferocious XD one AFD on friday? mentioned 12hrs of moderate to heavy rain.

We're under a flash flood watch for the entire forecast zone... and there are a couple of really bad burn areas that'll be in bad shape from this.

Glad you only had one power outage at least... :\
