Backseat Goodbye
Fandom: Kingdom
Prompts: fanfic100: Lovers
Mara couldn't look at the back seat the whole ride home from the point. Her eyes stubbornly remained fixed to the dashboard; fixed, that is, save for the sneaking appraisals she made towards the shadow she could barely make out in the spotty light of the street. His teeth were sparkling white, practically gleaming as he sat there grinning. Grinning!

This was nothing like what those romance books she had pilfered from a younger cousin had told her. So much for research. Everything was sore and sticky and awkward and he was GRINNING.

How was she ever going to look at him again? These sneaked glances were unsatisfying‹ she wanted him to pull the car over and comfort her, not sit there like some asshole who had banged a girl in the backseat.

She was never going to sit in the backseat. EVER.

They pulled onto her street, and her hands unbuckled her harness before clenching around the purse Lynn had demanded she borrow. "Well..." Mara began, wincing at how sharp her voice sounded in the darkness.

He made no reply, but the car twisted to the right, forcing Mara's shoulders to collide with his. Against her wishes, her shoulder lingered.

In the middle of her driveway he cut the engine and stomped on the brake, his free hand reaching for her hand. She considered leaping to freedom, but the damned heat kept her in the car, allowed him to lace his fingers with hers and pull her across the car.

There, lips clashed against teeth, and Mara quickly forgot the awkwardness, the stick digging into her hip, the fact they were kissing in full view of the living room where her parents were most certainly watching.

When she finally pulled away, Mara kept her eyes firmly closed, but couldn't help but shiver as his rough hand cupped her cheek. "I'm still not introducing you to my father." She whispered, eyes closed as his lips pressed against her collar bone.

He chuckled, ash and fire swirling in a humid wind. "Same time tomorrow?"

She smirked and let her lips answer for her.

Tricky Thing About Memories...

For all the awkward situations the girl put him through, Reed still liked hanging around with Lynn. She was brilliant company, and the two could go on talking for hours. With that much time spent talking about anything and everything, the subject of first times was bound to come up sooner or later.

He just hadn't expected it to come up quite so soon.

"I don't remember." Reed rubbed at the side of his neck, hoping Lynn would let it slide.

But she leaned forward, her hand arched around his forearm. "I don't believe you. Come on, it can't be that embarrassing! I should tell you about Mara's-"

"No!" He shrank forcibly, afraid that demon woman would hear her cousin's words. "No, please no. That woman hates me enough already without even more fuel being laid on my pyre. And seriously, I really don't remember."

The hand tightened. "Come on, you can tell me Reed!"

He sighed. "I really don't remember Lynn. I remember going to the party and hanging out with Clarissa Scott, this really down to earth girl who I had a crush on for a few years. You would have liked her."

"Mmmmhm." Lynn mumbled, but Reed didn't miss the narrowing of her eyes. "Fast forward to the good stuff, boy scout."

"Well, we were sitting upstairs talking, and I remember Clarissa handing me a drink, and that was about it. If I strain really hard, I can remember bits and pieces, but the stuff you are interested in I just can't remember. And trust me, I've tried. Clarissa was really hot." He sighed.

Lynn, however, didn't react the way he thought she would, but burst out laughing. "Oh Reed," She managed after a bit "Only you would get ruffied at a party."

"I wasn't!" He denied, throwing his free arm up in the air when she continued giggling. "That was the first time I got drunk. I don't remember things very well when I'm inebriated."

This time, Lynn quieted, and Reed knew the frown on Lynn's face was not good news. "So you don't remember the earthquake at all, do you?"

He frowned in turn. "A lot of that night... my brain works different now that I've got the Hunter active in me. That's why I stay drunk in the dark, but sober right up under any kind of light. If I ran into Clarissa now and the same events happened, you bet I'd remember every last detail."

"Well, we'd better keep you away from Miss Scott then, now haven't we?"
