Saw Lord of War-- WOW. Good movie-- I really loved Nicholas Cage in this role and can't wait for his next (The Weatherman). It was just horrible watching the pieces fall down around the character, warring with the instinct to root for the main character despite the fact he was, for all intents and purposes, the bad guy. Because in the beginning Cage himself lies when he says "he" makes no move to make himself the good guy, but by showing little touches Cage brought to the role, the Director very clearly made the audience feel for the character who proclaims his love for shades of gray. It was a real feeling movie for its brutality and the audience feels awkward upon leaving it-- the small theater Rebecca and I viewed the film in was unusually quiet, sober even, as we left in our scattered groups.
There hasn't been another movie like this that I've seen this summer, but Constant Gardener is the romantic cousin of this movie. The rumored love angle to CG is what made several audience members I observed when we had the film leave grumbling it tainted the viewing experience-- the touch was too much, the audience too aware of the director manipulating them to tell a story.
But LoW revels in the director's touch, and you don't mind it because it's Nicholas Cage and a brutal movie that makes you rethink your actions the rest of the day.
A+
