A final sunset on the waves
fandom: Kingdom
character: Mara (bit of Deon, random!hunter/kid)
prompt: 31_days: where everyone you know never leaves too soon (late drabble)
timeline: Long Decemberish. Uncertain canon-- as always with futurefics, depends on what happens when we get there in game.
She hadn't changed out of the somber black, moving through the quiet house with a trash bag that never seemed to fill

Also her whole bit about 'hero', juxtaposed with her remaining anger/wariness around Deon, just makes me want to punch him in the head a few times. I can't wait until we get roughly to this point.
Eventually I will have to get a healthier mxd/dxm icon ^.^;;
I had hoped that her wariness and upset still came across even as she's going about Deon in a positive light. She'd never admit that she still respects him to Deon's face, especially after his stupid attempt to fix everything by himself, but to a third party who is in pain? He's the first example that comes to her head of a hero, and that definitely means something that she's not really ready to open up about. But we'll get there eventually <3.
And this entire thing is directly your fault, in a wonderful fault kind of way, because there's no way I could have mustered up the coherency to get this out without our little drabble war. And although the piece could stand with an edit or six, I'm pleased it at least has potential, which is better than almost anything I wrote last month.
And finally, since I am rambling, it is refreshing to write Mara in a new setting like this, where there's some maturity, finally, and she's actually trying to correct a situation she's fucked up instead of stewing in alcohol and her own insecurities. And it which makes me long for this part of Mara and Deon's character arcs, because I'm incredibly interested to see Deon's end. But half the journey is getting there, so I will wait patiently and actually post so we can *get there* XD. But this gives me a signpost to work towards, so I feel loads better now on the progress front!

Seriously, this is lovely and heartbreaking and sad. Mara seems so old and so sad despite everything we know and she's starting to really grow up.
